I have worked with many students interested in bioarchaeology, anthropology, and archaeology over the years. I’ve advised graduate students, undergraduate students in the senior honors program and Immersion Vanderbilt projects, and students from local high schools in Nashville. These students get hands on experience in the Osteology Lab and Bioarchaeology Stable Isotope Research Lab (BSIRL). They have learned various aspects of the research process, including how to develop anthropological questions that can be addressed with bioarchaeological data, and students are involved in research design, data management, and data analysis. Through immersive research projects, students learn proper handling of human remains, skeletal analysis, dental and bone preparations, chemical prep of archaeological and environmental samples, and lab safety protocols. Many students have traveled with me to Peru and worked on excavations, sample collection, and other research programs. Students often obtain grants to support those field and lab projects.
